Abstract
Markus Zusak did not always want to be a writer. First he wanted to be a painter like his father before realizing that he didn’t have the skill. He went to college for teaching and became a janitor at a school. He then taught English at his old high school before finally fulfilling his dream of becoming a writer. He wrote a series of three, The Underdog, Fighting Ruben Wolfe, and When Dogs Cry, that received a handful of awards. His next book, The Messenger, was more well received and obtained many rewards. Zusak is most well known for his fifth book, The Book Thief, which received a huge amount of awards. The book was so popular that it was made into a major motion picture. Now Zusak works on his next book while teaching part time and surfing. He lives in New South Wales, Australia with his wife, Mika, and his two children. (Rockman, 2008)
